On this date in 1294, Pope Celestine V ("Tack on an extra "V" for "Virtue!") abdicated the papacy after only five months, wishing to return to his former life as an ascetic hermit. Where, I'm assuming, he would be free to once again make war against his arch rivals the Alkelyne Hermits, forever battling over their mutually exclusive understandings of the Apocrypha and over pH levels.
Celestine was later Sainted, so I guess the Ascetics were successful.

Also, it's Saint Lucy's Day in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and SOME OTHER COUNTRY I'M NOT MENTIONING. Saint Lucy is best known for being the one holding the football for Saint Charles. She always pulled it away at the last second, and he screamed "AAUGH!" There's a possibility I'm thinking of the wrong thing.
