December 5, 2007

On this date in 1590, Niccolo Sfondrati became Pope Gregory XIV. I guess he had been walking down the street, when he observed trouble up ahead and ducked into a phone booth and came out... Pope. I'm not really sure how this works. (1)

Also on this date in 1766, James Christie held his first sale in London. Christie would go on to hold many such sales, and as his insatiable desire to sell sell SELL grew exponentially, he found himself talking faster and faster so that he could sell more stuff in less time. Later auctioneers, wanting to emulate their hero, adopted this trait. (2) Eventually, Christie would found an international auction house that would become one of the largest, most famous in the world. That auction house is, of course, Sotheby's.
